Dr. Luo Ai Mei (PhD, CUHK), visiting Research Fellow from the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea, joins the Lehigh Music Department and Lehigh community for a week of teaching, colloquium lecture, and a special recital of Chinese music for the guzheng, a traditional 21-stringed zither.Dr. Luo met with students in Prof. Tong Soon Lee's MUS 090 class to introduce them to the guzheng, letting them hear and play the instrument themselves. On Wednesday, October 30 at 4:30 pm, she will present a colloquium lecture in the STEPS building, Room 280, on the Satoyama initiative (a cultural-ecological project to revive rural landscapes affected by industrialization) and Hakka Children's songs that have been used to reconceptualize the environment.On Thursday, October 31, Dr. Luo will present a lunchtime recital at 12:15 in the LUAG Lower Gallery (Zoellner Arts Center) on the guzheng. She will be joined in recital by Lehigh University graduate student Wang Li, who has played the guzheng since age 5.Both events are free and open to the public.
