From the Stage to the Screen
The Lehigh University Symphonic Band (MUS 023) is a large, vibrant concert ensemble that brings together the diverse voices of the Lehigh community. As the primary destination for wind and percussion players during the spring semester, the Symphonic Band offers a high-energy environment for woodwind, brass, and percussion players who want to keep making music at a professional level while exploring the "Pops" side of the concert stage.
Whether you are a seasoned player or looking to pick your instrument back up after a break, the Symphonic Band offers a welcoming environment and a massive wall of sound.
A Contemporary Repertoire
While traditional concert bands often focus on historical masterworks, the Symphonic Band at Lehigh leans into Pops and Contemporary Literature. Our programs are designed to be as fun to play as they are to hear, often featuring:
- Cinematic Scores: Epic themes from the giants of film music, including John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Alan Silvestri.
- Broadway & Beyond: Medleys and arrangements from the best of musical theater and popular culture.
- Modern Classics: High-energy arrangements of contemporary wind band music, marches, and symphonic transcriptions.
A Place for Every Player
We believe that musical expression should be accessible to everyone at Lehigh. The Symphonic Band is designed to be our most inclusive wind ensemble.
- Open to All: This ensemble is open to any interested student across all colleges and majors. No formal audition is required for membership.
- The Spring Home of the 97: While open to the entire campus, the Symphonic Band serves as the natural spring home for members of the Marching 97, allowing the spirit and community of the fall season to continue in the concert hall.
- Community Driven: In addition to students, the band often includes Lehigh faculty, staff, and local community members, creating a unique, intergenerational musical experience.
- Balanced Commitment: We understand the rigors of a Lehigh academic schedule. The Symphonic Band provides a rewarding creative outlet that meets once a week, allowing you to prioritize your studies while maintaining your passion for performance.
Performing at Zoellner
The Symphonic Band is a staple of the spring performance season at the Zoellner Arts Center. Our concerts are known for their festive atmosphere and accessible programming, making them a favorite for the campus community. It is a chance to step onto a world-class stage and share the joy of music-making with a packed house.
