The Art of Collaboration
At Lehigh University, we believe that the most profound musical growth happens when every voice is heard. Our Chamber Music program is designed to move students from the "back of the section" to the center of the stage. In a chamber ensemble, you are more than a performer—you are a leader, a collaborator, and an essential part of a cohesive whole.
Why Chamber Music?
Chamber music—often described as "the music of friends"—offers a unique set of benefits that large ensembles simply cannot replicate:
- Heightened Musical Independence: Without a conductor, every student is responsible for their own part, fostering a deep sense of rhythmic and pitch accountability.
- Interpersonal Communication: Performance in a small ensemble is an exercise in non-verbal communication. Students learn to "read" their peers, reacting to subtle cues in breath, body language, and phrasing.
- Artistic Agency: In our chamber groups, students have a voice in interpretation. You aren’t just following a baton; you are helping to shape the musical narrative.
- Intimate Mentorship: Our chamber groups receive focused coaching from faculty who are world-class performers, ensuring personalized instruction tailored to your specific instrument.
Our Ensembles
Lehigh offers a rich variety of small-ensemble opportunities that cater to diverse musical interests, from the Baroque period to the cutting edge of modern jazz and classical music.
Chamber Music Collegium (MUS 048)
The Chamber Music Collegium is our flagship course for classical small ensembles. Open by audition, this course forms trios, quartets, and quintets based on student ability and instrument availability.
- For String Players: Dive into the core trio, quartet, and quintet repertoire, from the foundational works of Haydn and Mozart to the complex textures of the 21st century.
- For Pianists: Transition from soloist to collaborator. Our program offers pianists vital experience in piano trios, quartets, and instrumental duos, focusing on the unique balance required in collaborative performance.
- For Woodwind & Brass Players: Beyond traditional quintets, we are proud to host several specialized instrument ensembles that allow students to explore the unique sonority of their instrument families:
- Clarinet Choir: Experience the incredible range and versatility of the clarinet family, performing everything from classical transcriptions to contemporary original works.
- Flute Ensemble: Showcase the shimmering textures and agile beauty of the flute, with opportunities to perform on piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute.
- Brass Ensemble: Known for its brilliance and power, this group brings together trumpets, horns, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas to explore majestic fanfares and orchestral transcriptions.
Small Jazz Ensembles (MUS 049)
For students interested in improvisation and the evolving language of jazz, our Small Jazz Ensembles offer a focused environment to hone your craft. These "combos" allow for a deep exploration of jazz standards and original compositions. You will work on spontaneous interaction, solo development, and the foundational skills of the jazz tradition in a setting that encourages creative risk-taking.
