The Art of the Breath
The Lehigh University Wind Ensemble (MUS 022) is the university’s premier auditioned wind and percussion organization. Comprised of the most advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion players on campus, the ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of the finest literature for the modern wind band.
While our members represent nearly every academic major at Lehigh—from Bioengineering to International Relations—they share a common commitment to musical excellence and high-level artistic collaboration.
The "Crown Jewels" of Repertoire
The Wind Ensemble explores the full depth and breadth of the wind band medium. Our programming is designed to challenge the modern musician and engage the modern listener, focusing on:
- Cornerstone Masterworks: Essential compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries that define the wind band sound.
- Contemporary Voices: World premieres and recent works by the most exciting composers of our day.
- Symphonic Textures: A focus on repertoire that showcases the unique colors of the wind band, ranging from massive, powerful tuttis to highly intricate and transparent soloistic passages.
A Standard of Excellence
Membership in the Wind Ensemble is a mark of musical distinction at Lehigh. The ensemble operates with the discipline and focus of a professional organization, preparing students for a lifetime of musical engagement.
- Auditioned Membership: Entry is by audition at the beginning of each year. These auditions ensure a high level of technical facility and musical maturity across the ensemble.
- Conductor-Led Artistry: Under the direction of Prof. Darin Lewis, students experience a rigorous rehearsal process that focuses on ensemble blend, precise intonation, and a deep expressive interpretation of complex scores.
- Interdisciplinary Artists: The Wind Ensemble is proof that you don't have to major in music to play at a professional level. Our students find that the deep focus required in rehearsal provides a perfect intellectual balance to their challenging Lehigh coursework.
Center Stage at Zoellner
The Wind Ensemble performs twice a year in the Zoellner Arts Center, bringing a sophisticated symphonic sound to the Baker Hall stage. These performances are a showcase of the highest caliber of student achievement at Lehigh, providing our musicians with the opportunity to share their craft with the university and the broader Bethlehem community.
