Choral music is the art of ensemble singing, ranging from intimate chamber groups to large symphonic choirs. It is a discipline that combines vocal technique, linguistic study, and the unique "social practice" of harmonizing with others to express a shared text. Choral singers develop deep skills in listening, respiratory control, and the ability to interpret poetry and history through the medium of the human voice.

Choral Arts at Lehigh: 150 Years of Song

At Lehigh, singing is a foundational tradition dating back to 1869. The Lehigh University Choral Arts (LUCA) is more than a performance track; it is a diverse collective where engineers, poets, and scientists join voices to create something that none of them could achieve alone.

We approach every score as a living text—an opportunity for both artistic expression and cultural inquiry. Whether performing a Renaissance motet in the Zoellner Arts Center or debuting a contemporary commission on an international stage, our singers are trained to be "thinker-singers" who understand the historical and social context of the music they perform.

Key Pillars of Study

Scholarly Artistry

In the rehearsal room, we don't just learn the notes; we investigate the "why." Students connect their vocal performances to the broader music academics of the department, exploring how choral works have reflected—and shaped—societal changes throughout history. This analytical approach ensures that every performance is intellectually grounded and emotionally resonant.

Global Citizenship

The choral experience at Lehigh extends far beyond the campus. Our ensembles serve as cultural ambassadors, regularly touring the globe to engage with different traditions and histories. Through international performance, students use music as a bridge to understand the world, developing a sense of global awareness that lasts a lifetime.

Performance & Community

Participation in the Choral Arts culminates in high-stakes performances in Baker Hall, often collaborating with professional orchestras. Beyond the stage, LUCA is a "home at Lehigh," providing a lifelong community where the bonds formed through harmony create lasting professional and personal networks.
