Composition

Composition is the art and science of creating original musical works. It involves a deep investigation into musical architecture—understanding how melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre interact to create a cohesive narrative. As a discipline, it requires both a rigorous mastery of historical "craft" (how the greats did it) and the creative courage to experiment with new sounds and technologies.

Composition at Lehigh: The Architecture of Sound

At Lehigh, the composition program is where theoretical mastery meets creative discovery. We view composition as a path to finding your unique musical voice, providing a curriculum that spans from the rigorous counterpoint of the Baroque era to the limitless possibilities of modern digital audio workstations

Our program is unique for its "Page to Stage" philosophy. We don't just teach you how to write music; we provide the professional resources to hear that music realized. Whether you are an engineer writing for a film score or a music major composing a full orchestral suite, you are part of a laboratory for new sounds where every student is encouraged to build their own musical world.

Key Pillars of Study

Foundation and Innovation

We believe that to break the rules effectively, you must first master them. Students move from deconstructing the masterworks of the 18th and 19th centuries to exploring the radical shifts in harmony and timbre that define the modern era. This sequence ensures that your creative freedom is backed by a professional-grade technical foundation in form, analysis, and orchestration.

Composition and Technology

The modern "composer’s desk" often includes a computer. At Lehigh, we bridge the gap between traditional notation and modern production. Students learn the essentials of sound recording, multitrack mixing, and mastering, ensuring they can not only write their music but produce high-fidelity versions of their work using industry-standard tools.

Professional Realization

One of the hallmarks of the Lehigh experience is the support for original work. Through the Senior Capstone, students have access to internal grant funding specifically designed to hire professional musicians to perform and record their compositions. This collaborative process allows student composers to work as "artistic directors" of their own projects, securing a professional portfolio for their future careers.

Creative Spaces

New works by student composers are frequently read, performed, and recorded by our student ensembles, giving composers the invaluable experience of hearing their architecture come to life in the world-class acoustics of the Zoellner Arts Center.
