Jazz

Jazz is a uniquely American art form rooted in the blues, swing, and a sophisticated language of spontaneous composition. As a discipline, it requires a dual mastery of technical facility and harmonic theory, allowing musicians to "converse" in real-time. Studying jazz develops a specific kind of creative problem-solving: the ability to take risks, react to a changing environment, and contribute to a collective groove.

Jazz at Lehigh: Beyond the Blue Note

Lehigh Jazz is where world-class mentorship meets student passion. Our program thrives on a unique energy fueled by our proximity to New York City—the jazz capital of the world. Led by acclaimed composer and trumpeter Bill Warfield, our faculty are active performers in the NYC scene, bringing "real-world" professional intensity directly from legendary clubs and Broadway pits to the bandstand here in Bethlehem.

We view jazz as an essential complement to the Lehigh academic experience. Whether you are an engineer, a business leader, or a scientist, the skills learned on the bandstand—collaborative interaction and creative risk-taking—perfectly mirror the rigors of your professional aspirations.

Key Pillars of Study

The Professional Pipeline

Our students don't just study jazz; they perform alongside the people who define it. Because our faculty are elite professionals from the New York scene, students receive a masterclass in modern professionalism with every rehearsal. This "side-by-side" mentorship ensures that our ensembles perform at a caliber that rivals the city's top venues.

Large Ensemble Power & Precision

Through the LU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, students explore the rich history of the Big Band. From the swing era of the Great American Songbook to avant-garde contemporary works, these large ensembles focus on the nuances of section playing, ensemble blend, and the sophisticated phrasing required for world-class large-group performance.

Small Group Interaction

For those who want to dive deep into the art of the "small group," our Jazz Combos provide an intimate laboratory for creative exploration. With only 3–7 players per group, you learn the conversational language of jazz—listening, responding, and navigating complex harmonies through improvisational growth.

Performance & Community

Jazz at Lehigh is a public-facing art. Our students perform in the Zoellner Arts Center and at high-profile campus events, often sharing the stage with guest artists and our NYC-based faculty. These performances prepare you to play with confidence and professional poise in any musical or professional setting.
